Duality of Perception

Expand Your Perception to See The Connection.

Product/Artist  2015  Lighting

Perception is an interactive lighting product that draws inspiration from Italo Calvino's novel "Invisible Cities" and its metaphorical city of Raissa. The installation aims to convey the concept that perception is a key factor in how we choose to view the world and the things we want to see. A need to expand the user's attention and perception out of the immediate self-centered position.

Background

The concept of "Perception" was initially inspired by the behavior of humans, who often tend to be self-centered and overlook the subtle threads of happiness that surround us. The installation seeks to challenge this tendency by encouraging viewers to expand their perception and actively seek out connections and moments of positivity. The dual nature of life, where happiness and sadness coexist and constantly shift, is mirrored in the metaphorical city of Raissa from Calvino's novel.

Through the use of dynamic lighting surface and interactive elements, "Perception" provides viewers with an interactive experience that encourages self-reflection on their own perception and how it influences their experiences. Users are invited to involve with the installation by manipulating the orientation of the acrylic sticks on one surface of the lighting, which in turn triggers shifts in the lighting patterns on the other side of the surface. This interactive process serves as a metaphor for the malleable nature of perception and how our perspectives can shift and change based on our actions and choices. It encourages users to explore the relationship between perception, action, and the resulting changes in their environment, not only inviting aesthetic pleasure but also fostering a deeper understanding of the concept being conveyed.
