Pedagogy & Education

Teaching and Learning as Experience

Pedagogically, I approach design education as an evolving, critical practice that bridges theory with hands-on application. While rooted in reflective inquiry, creative experimentation, and ethical responsibility, my teaching also draws directly from my professional practice in immersive interaction, XR, and human-centered design. I design and lead courses that integrate philosophical discourse and psychological frameworks, while grounding students in real-world design processes, tools, and methodologies.

As an educator, I see my role as an architect of learning experiences. I structure courses through embodied and metacognitive learning frameworks, informed by experiential learning, motivational interviewing practices, and a biopsychosocial understanding of human development. This approach allows students not only to engage with content in the present moment, but also to develop self-awareness, agency, and adaptive learning strategies that extend beyond the classroom and into future contexts.

From prototyping and spatial interaction to sensory storytelling and systems thinking, I aim to cultivate an environment where students connect conceptual understanding with technical and material experimentation. These strategies empower emerging designers to create with both empathy and intention—preparing them not only to reflect on the world, but to actively shape it.

With over 19 years of teaching experience across preschool, K–12, academia, and adult education, my instructional design and pedagogical approach focus on creating learning structures and systems grounded in psychosocial and cultural perspectives, informed by principles of human development.

I have taught and designed curricula in Seoul, South Korea (2001–2011) and New York, United States (2017–present), integrating experiential learning, reflective practice, and design research into diverse educational contexts.
